Svalbard - Isfjorden and Longyearbyen - 1450+ Images

Day 8 of my trip from Norway to Svalbard.

After a day and a half at sea, we see the first glimpse of Svalbard on the horizon at midnight! By the next morning we start to make our way to Isfjorden where I got to spot reindeer along the landscape, puffins flying past and a whale breaching. We go further along the fjord and make our way towards the glaciers with amazing mountains all around us with perfect clear conditions, blue sky and a warm 12degrees celcius!

I had the amazing opportunity to see wild Polar bears to the side of a glacier. Once I spotted them I didn't want to take my eyes off them and we got to watch the mother and her cub, making their way along the beach, climbing the rocks and ice.

From the glaciers we start to head towards Longyearbyen and get a Rib out to Grumant, an old abandoned soviet town, established in 1912 and abandoned in 1965. The cliffs the whole way down this coast were stunning and full of life. As our rib started to get in close, there was a huge rockfall. I instinctively started taking photos as the rocks were landing down in front of us! We had flocks of razorbills, puffins, guillemots flying around us the whole way. As we headed back, 2 King Eider flew over our heads! I also captured a few Walrus while out on the boat.

Now back in Longyearbyen, I took a short walk into the town to gather some reference of the industrial buildings and beautiful mountains around the town.

Svalbard is such an otherworldly environment, its hard to describe the vast and desolate feeling you get. Its simultaneously awe inspiring and humbling.

There were so many interesting things to take photos off, I didnt know where to point my camera, I was so overwhelmed. It was great to go in the summer as I got to see all the strata on the mountains that the snow would of covered. There are so many nice colours in the rock, not to mention the cobalt blues that you get in the glaciers and icebergs. The absolute variety I got to photograph in one day was spectacular and an unforgettable experience!
